Getting treatment for an addiction does not have to be as difficult as families imagine it to be. An addict is a difficult person to cope with, which is why many families have so many problems. Addiction causes a loved one to completely change their priorities and their personality. Severe and chronic mood swings, defensiveness and weakened physical capability are just one of the problems that addiction can cause. There are thousands of treatment centers and hotline that are available in this country to help families who are struggling with addiction. The problem is that there are millions of families dealing with those addictions and only a small percentage actually reach out for help. It only takes a phone call or a conversation to get your family moving on the right path. Peer intervention and treatment are wonderful ways to get an addicted loved on the help they deserve.
Getting Help
Getting help does not have to be as difficult or confusing as many families make it out to be. Addiction is a common problem in the United States, much more common than most people who think. The problem is the negative connotation that addiction has gained over the years, along with the many misconceptions about the problem. Addiction is defined as a chronic relapsing brain disorder, which is characterized by chronic drug searching and consuming. Drugs change the way the brain and body function. Behavior and emotions change do to drugs, which causes the individual to lose part of themselves. The chemical change and ultimate addiction forces that individual to continue to search for and consume drugs. Treatment can help an addict understand the root causes of their addiction, how it was able to continue for as long as it did and how to prevent it from happening again. Treatment can also help the family understand the difficulty they and the addict have gone through, will continue to battle through and how they can come together to remedy the situation. There is no cure for addiction, but rather a systematic program of rehabilitation that gives the addict and their families the tools they need to keep the recovering addict sober, happy and the family feeling renewed.
Peer-to-Peer Addiction Treatment
Peer to Peer addiction treatment is a fairly new program aimed at getting addicts to overcome their addiction and become healthy, contributing members of society. This is a different approach than the recovery process in which members in recovery take control of their lives and build constructive relationships with others. By utilizing the peer method new admittees to the program gain a personal connection with those who are further along in the program. There is no better source of information and understanding than a peer who knows first-hand the trouble the newly acquired addict is going through. Professionals offer various therapies on a need basis. Addicts who enter in this program have found it easier to get through the first stages of recovery, often thought of as the most troubling, easier because they found someone to which they were comfortable. The peer to peer system allows addicts to open up easier than they would at a more conventional treatment facility. There are currently ten of these peer to peer treatment centers in Massachusetts. The program is hoping to get more funding, as well as federal funding following various accreditation reviews. The advocates of the program are spreading the word of the treatment to other centers. They have worked hard through a system of trial and error on addiction treatment and believe this system to be by far the best option they have come across.
